How to Increase the Size of an XBox 360 Hard Drive

Though the Xbox 360 comes with a 20 GB hard drive, many players find that they require additional space to store games and media. Gamers who download lots of HD video, game demos or Xbox Live Arcade games will soon find that 20 GB of space is not enough. To combat this problem, Microsoft has released a 120 GB Xbox 360 hard drive. The hard drive even comes with a transfer kit, allowing players to transfer files from an old hard drive to the new one.

Instructions

  1. Transferring Files To Your New Hard Drive

    • 1

Turn off the Xbox 360 system and remove all accessories from the system's controller ports.

    • 2

Turn the system on and connect a controller.

    • 3

Connect one end of the USB transfer cable to the 120 GB hard drive, and connect the other end to the USB port on the back of the Xbox 360 system.

    • 4

Insert the hard drive transfer disc into the Xbox 360. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the transfer.

    Installing Your New Hard Drive

    • 5

Turn off the Xbox 360 system. Detach the USB transfer cable from the system and from the 120 GB hard drive.

    • 6

Press the gray release tab on the front of your old hard drive. Gently lift the hard drive from the system. If you are installing a hard drive for the first time, press the gray release tab on the front of the hard drive bay cover and remove it from the system.

    • 7

Place the 120 GB hard drive onto the hard drive bay. The narrow end of the hard drive should be positioned toward the front of the system, while the wide end should be toward the back.

    • 8

Gently push the hard drive down until the release tab clicks into place.

Tips & Warnings

  • The transfer process could take longer than an hour, depending on how much data you are transferring to your new hard drive.

  • Do not touch the metal contacts on the hard drive or the hard drive bay with your fingers or any metal objects. Doing so could damage your hard drive or your Xbox 360 system. The hard drive transfer is a one-time process. Once the transfer is complete, the old hard drive will be erased. Additionally, any content that was on the new hard drive before the transfer will be erased as well. After the transfer, you will not be able to transfer data from the old hard drive to the new one again.
