How to Build a Virtual School

School systems around the world use Second Life for many of their virtual educational programs. Virtual schools teach courses primarily, and often entirely, online for all grade levels including graduate programs. Virtual schools give students the opportunity of distance learning from around the world. Creating a virtual school can be accomplished in the virtual world of Second Life.

    Creating a Second Life Virtual School

  1. Step 1

    Create a Virtual School inside of Second Life, such as the Imperial College's Postgraduate Medical School. This school has a virtual campus inside of Second Life. At this campus, meetings are held in the auditorium, there are virtual clinics and operating rooms used for training. Their campus offers a virtual school where professionals can be trained and patients can learn about procedures and health-care facilities. Create a free online Second Life account and an avatar by signing up at www.secondlife.com. Read the information about Second Life to have a better understand of this 3-D virtual world.

  2. Step 2

    Log in to your new Second Life account and interact with other educators. You can find these educators inside of Second Life at the International Society for Technology in Education. This Second Life educational group is on a virtual island; you can find this group by doing a search inside of Second Life. At the International Society for Technology in Education you will have the opportunity to talk to and network with other educators about the best practices for Second Life virtual schools and learn about real life education opportunities.

  3. Step 3

    Purchase land for your Virtual School. You can purchase land in a private region, this will give you control over the access to your land. You can purchase land from Linden Labs in the Second Life Grid at www.secondlife.com or from eBay.

  4. Step 4

    Hire a Second Life graphic artist and architect to create and build your Virtual School. You can find a listing of graphic artist and architect in the Second Life Grid at www.secondlife.com.

  5. Step 5

    For accounting purposes create a website for your virtual school where students can register and pay for classes. You will need a hosting service that has an e-commerce tool that offers a secure shopping cart, such as PayPal. You will also want to register your domain name for your virtual school. Once you have a website and domain name registered, create a group inside of Second Life for your virtual school. This will allow you to communicate with your virtual school staff, teachers, students and post your Virtual School website information.
