How to Change the Air Flow Meter in a Nissan Sentra

The air flow meter on your Nissan Sentra measures the amount of air flowing into the air intake system. By doing this, it helps to control the air to fuel ratio. The air flow meter sends a signal to the Sentra's ECU, and the ECU meters the fuel in the electronically controlled fuel injection system. The air flow meter in your Nissan Sentra is located in the air intake tubing that runs from the air filter to the fuel injection system. If your car has problems starting, idles rough or stalls intermittently while you are driving, then it's time to replace the mass air flow sensor.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Socket wrench with socket set
  • Mass air flow sensor
  • Philips head screwdriver
  1. Step 1

Open the hood and locate the air cleaning assembly. It's on the passenger side of the engine bay near the front of the vehicle. It's a box-shaped, plastic box. There is a large plastic piece of tubing running from the cleaner box to the fuel injection system.

  2. Step 2

Examine the new air flow meter. This is the component you'll be replacing on the air intake system. If you are in doubt, you can use the new meter as a reference for exactly what you are looking for. The meter looks like a "T". The top part of the "T" is relatively flat and is where the meter secures to the intake. The bottom of the "T" is the sensor that hangs in the air intake and captures data as air flows around it.

  3. Step 3

Remove the air box cover and pull the air filter out. You may need to remove several screws, depending on the year of your Sentra. Your Sentra may have the clip style air box. If this is the case, you can simple lift up on the clips and remove the top half of the air cleaner box. The filter will lift out of the box. There is nothing securing the filter.

  4. Step 4

Loosen the band clamps on the intake tubing by turning the retaining screw counterclockwise with a screwdriver and pull the intake tubing off of the air box.

  5. Step 5

Unplug the electrical connection that runs to the air flow meter.

  6. Step 6

Remove the screws holding the sensor in place and pull the meter out of the air tube assembly.

  7. Step 7

Install the new air flow meter. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not touch the sensor part of the meter with your fingers. The sensor is incredibly delicate, and you will likely damage it if you touch, hit or drop it.
