Making your own candles allows you to customize the scent, color, size and shape of your candle. When coloring a candle, special dyes are used that come in liquid, powder and chip form. Black candle dye can be purchased in stores, but you can also create your own black candle dye by simply mixing base colors: red, blue and yellow. Any color can be created with these base colors. The best way to create a pure black candle dye is by using liquid candle dye, although powder and chips can be used as well.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Red candle dye
  • Blue candle dye
  • Yellow candle dye
  • Mixing stick
  • Plastic cup
  • White sheet of paper
  1. Step 1

Pour about 1 tbsp. each of red, blue and yellow candle dye into the plastic cup.

  2. Step 2

Use the mixing stick to blend the colors together. If you are using powdered or chipped candle dye, follow the directions on the packaging for processing.

  3. Step 3

Test the shade of the candle dye by smearing some onto the white sheet of paper. If the shade is too light, try adding a few more drops of red candle dye. Repeat this until you have the desired black shade.

  4. Step 4

Add a UV inhibitor to the black dye before adding it to your candle mold to avoid discoloration.

Tips & Warnings
  • Candle dyes will stain clothing; always wear gloves and a protective apron or smock when mixing.
