Unplug the Torque Converter

Torque converters are used in automatic transmissions, with a similar function as a clutch in a manual transmission. The torque converter works with an automatic transmission to measure ideal shift points, depending on load weight, acceleration and operating conditions. The torque converter should only be unplugged when the vehicle is not operating.

Instructions

    • 1

Pop your hood and disconnect the negative battery cable. Engage the parking brake for safety.

    • 2

Lift the vehicle with the floor jack, using the factory-approved front jacking points. Never jack a vehicle from the side when you will be using jack stands. Secure the vehicle with the jack stands, allowing enough clearance for you to comfortably access underneath the vehicle.

    • 3

Remove the necessary components to access the torque converter. Most vehicles will have little or no components to remove; others may require brackets or braces to be removed. Take off what you need, but keep up with all hardware.

    • 4

Use the socket wrench to remove the torque converter cover. Disconnect the wiring from the torque converter. Remember to reconnect the torque converter and its cover when your need for having it unplugged is fulfilled.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never attempt to drive a vehicle with the torque converter disconnected. Doing so can damage your transmission.
