How to Increase the RAM on a PC
RAM, or random access memory, enables your computer to open and use multiple programs at the same time. When a computer becomes slow when you open multiple programs, the RAM is being completely used, and this may be a sign you need an upgrade.

1
Determine how much RAM your computer currently has. If you're not sure, right-click the My Computer icon (Computer on the Microsoft Vista operating system) on your desktop and select Properties. From the General tab you will find a listing of how much RAM your computer currently has.
-
2
See what kind of RAM your computer takes. There are several different kinds, and you will need to make sure you purchase the correct kind. This information can be found in the computer's user manual. If you cannot find the user manual, log onto the website of the company that manufactured the computer and select your make and model.

3
Purchase the memory from an electronics or computer store. Computer specialty stores will have a wide range of RAM. There are also numerous websites that sell RAM, such as BestBuy.com, Archmemory.com, and Memorystock.com.
-
4
Power down the computer and remove all the cords from the back. Remove the screws and slide the case off. These screws will typically be found on the back side of the computer.
-
5
Clean and wash your hands before handling the hardware inside the computer. You will not want to bring dirt dust or oil from your skin into the computer and possibly damage it.
-
6
On the motherboard (the metal base of the computer to which all the electrical wiring is attached), you will see two to four strips, which are usually about an inch wide and five inches long. These are the RAM strips, which hold and connect the RAM to the motherboard. Usually there will be extra strips. On the ends of the strips there will be tightening flaps, which you flip up or down to lock or unlock.
-
7
Unlock the flaps and insert the RAM card. Make sure the RAM is perfectly vertical while inserting it into the computer. You do not want to hold it at an angle because it will not fit, and putting pressure while the RAM is crooked may damage or break it. When it is in place, push the flaps back up to tighten and lock the RAM card in.
-
8
Place the case back on the computer and plug all the cords back in. You can now power the computer back on.

Tips & Warnings
You may want to use an anti-static wrist band while installing the RAM into the computer. Static electricity can build up with the rustling of your clothes, and when you come into contact with the electrical system of the computer, the charge may jump to the computer and could possibly damage some of the hardware. The anti-static wrist band will combat this problem by grounding the static charge in your body. Use the band by placing it around your wrist and clamping the wire attached to a solid piece of metal inside of the computer. A link in Resources will lead you to an online store where you can purchase the device.
