-
Step 1
Utilize your network of friends and acquaintances to locate a reliable, trustworthy pet sitter. Also, try getting a recommendation from your veterinarian or the local humane society.
-
Step 2
Contact the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters or Pet Sitters International for local pet sitting services.
-
Step 3
Don't be afraid to ask for references. If the pet sitter refuses to provide phone numbers of other clients, be suspicious.
-
Step 4
Make sure the pet sitter is bonded to protect against theft. Commercial liability insurance -- to cover accidents and negligence -- is also a plus.
-
Step 5
If everything checks out, have the pet sitter come to your house to meet with your pet. Observe how well they get along, and if your pet seems at ease. Because, ultimately, all the glowing references in the world won't matter if your pet doesn't get along with the prospective pet sitter.
