Best Buy is the largest specialty electronics store in the United States, operating over 1,000 stores. Do you have want to get into electronics retailing? If so, a career with Best Buy might be for you.
Consider whether a job with Best Buy is for you. Best Buy is on the cutting edge of electronic retail and has a young, hip image that makes working for Best Buy very popular for many younger workers.
Most jobs are retail positions in Best Buy stores. Some are specialized jobs such as "Geek Squad" which install and repair electronics, mostly computers. There are management jobs in stores which employees can be promoted into over time. If you have substantial management experience you may be able to apply for a store management job.
Keep in mind that you new employees probably won't be hired full time and that it takes time to advance into a full time position. Part timers get benefits such as employee discounts and can participate in the 401K plan. Full time employees get health and dental benefits, tuition assistance, and other benefits.
There are of course many other jobs with a company as large as Best Buy such as distribution managers, buyers, marketing experts, accountants, lawyers, human resources personnel, etc. Many of these jobs require college degrees and are full time. You can view and apply for these jobs on the Best Buy jobs website. (See link at the end of this article.)
To apply for a job at Best Buy, you need to go through their website and apply for a position at a Best Buy near you. Applicants may be as young as 16 years old.
When you apply online, you will take a personality test to see if Best Buy is the right fit for you. The company is looking for honest, hard working, and dedicated people, so answer the questions accordingly. Also, remember that spelling counts!
If you do OK in the online application, you will get a call for an interview in a Best Buy store. (If you're applying for a corporate job elsewhere, a recruiter may interview you on the phone or make other arrangements.) Show up on time for your interview in the store. You will probably be interviewed by two managers. Make sure you are well groomed -- no wild hair or excessive jewelry. You might note how other Best Buy employees are dressed as your guide. Don't wear flip flops to your interview.
Express enthusiasm and your interest in learning the business during your store interviews. Stating that you're available immediately and are willing to work where needed could be a big plus to get you in the door.
If you pass the store interviews, a decision will be made on where to place you, pay, and hours.
If you get the job, congratulations. Your career is now in your hands. Work hard, be enthusiastic, and volunteer for assignments and to fill in when management needs extra help.
