Step 1
Plan to go to the school’s Meet the Teacher Day. You will have an opportunity to meet your child’s teacher, along with the school administrators, the school librarian and other members of your learning community.
-
Step 2
Attend the school Open House, which is often planned for a few months into the school year. You will be able to see student work presented in your child’s classroom and you will show your child’s teacher that you have an interest in your child’s education.
-
Step 3
Volunteer at your child’s school. There are many opportunities for parents who are at home as well as parents who work. If you work during the day, ask your child’s teacher if you can prepare art projects or put together a special project for the class.
-
Step 4
Parent/Teacher conferences are the place to ask questions. Teachers are often too busy during other events to be able to answer specific questions about your child. If you have some concerns at any time during the school year, make an appointment to see your child’s teacher.
-
Step 5
Ask questions in an organized manner. Ask your child’s teacher how she would like to receive questions. Many teachers will check each child’s planner, or you may be able to email the teacher with questions or concerns.
-
Step 6
Pose your questions carefully. It is best to put questions in a positive light. Word your questions to show that your main concern is that your child is getting the best education possible.
-
Step 7
Join school committees and clubs. There is usually a job for everyone, and there will always be something you can do that works with your schedule. This is also a perfect opportunity to meet other parents and their families.
-
Step 8
Enjoy your child’s teacher. Every teacher has something to offer your child. The more you get to know your child’s teacher and how your school system is run, the more prepared you will be to create a successful and enriching school year for your child.
