Step 1
Set aside a place specifically for mail. This is where all the mail will be placed until you have time to go through it.
-
Step 2
Don't keep items you don't need. Set aside a place for all unwanted clothing. As soon as you realize clothing doesn't fit it goes into a bag for donation. If something breaks you either fix it immediately or throw it away.
-
Step 3
Prevent clutter from coming into your home by not buying duplicate items. Don't buy another wine bottle opener or pizza cutter unless you are going to get rid of the old one.
-
Step 4
Set aside a place for children to keep their school items. You can use colorful cubes, baskets or storage containers. This is where all drawings, craft projects etc will be stored. Go through this regularly and throw away anything that they don't want anymore.
-
Step 5
Set aside a place for children's toys. Whether this be a room or simple cubes or baskets, make sure they know that toys should be placed back here when they are done playing with them.
-
Step 6
Set aside a place for pet toys. Although the pet will drag these out and play with them, make sure to put them all back in a single location at the end of each day.
-
Step 7
Get rid of holiday decorations. Each year when you get out or put up holiday decorations, weed out the stuff that doesn't work or that you just don't like. Don't repack items thinking that you will get rid of it next year.
-
Step 8
Keep it clean and clutter free by setting aside a few minutes each day to pick up items that are out of place.
