A lot of small children like bath time, because the child enjoys splashing in the water, soap bubbles, and pouring water form one place in the bathtub to another. Too many unintentional drowning happens in the bathtub. Small children should never be left alone in the bathtub. Two of the biggest concerns among many are drowning and/or scalding. There are many ways to keep a child safe. Below are a few suggestions to help in making better decisions and/or make one aware of dangers that could happen to your child while bathing.

Difficulty: Easy

A LITTLE CAN BE TOO MUCH:
Infants and small children can drown in very little water, so please do not assume that there has to be lots of water in the bathtub. Soap, bubble bath, etc. can cause the bathtub to become very slippery. A child can slip and not be able to lift themselves up and drown.

    TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE:
Do not leave infants or small children alone with a slightly older sibling, they may not be able to lift a wet child by themselves. Stay in the bathroom with small children and ignore the phone, doorbell, and anything that is not extremely important. If something is very important, remove the child and take the child with you. Just one minute, can be a minute too late.

    HOT, HOT, HOT:
Infants and toddlers are at the highest risk of injury from bath water scalding. Adult skin is much tougher than a baby's, so care must be taking when filling a bathtub with water. Use your elbow instead of your hand to test the temperature of the bath water. Consider installing scald-prevention devices on your tub faucets.

  4. Step 4

PLEASE DON'T LIGHT UP MY LIFE:
Minimize the risk of electrocution by unplugging and removing all appliances that are not in use, that are near the bathtub. Such as, hair dryers, curling irons, electric razors, radios, etc.
