How to Get Yourself Free Legal Assistance

In 1974 congress established the Legal Services Corporation to provide free legal assistance for eligible Americans. The Legal Services Corporation does not provide legal assistance for criminal cases. In a case like that the judge will usually appoint you an attorney to defend you if you couldn't afford one. Instead, the Legal Services Corporation provides legal assistance only in civil matters. They have helped millions of Americans obtain quality legal assistance that would otherwise not have been available because of the cost involved.

Instructions

    • 1

Call your local Federal Information Center at 800-688-9889. When connected to a Information Specialist ask them for the telephone number of the LSC sponsored office near you. Or you can go directly to the LSC website and you will be able to find nearby locations.

    • 2

Call Legal Services and ask to make an appointment with a lawyer to discuss your legal problem. The secretary or clerk answering the phone may ask you to state your income to determine your eligibility.

    • 3

Apply to the Legal Services Corporation and see if you are eligible for free legal services. You must meet certain income requirements and will have to document your income on your forms.

    • 4

Follow all of your lawyer's recommendations and provide her with any requested documents as quickly as possible.

Tips & Warnings

  • In certain instances Legal Services will still help you out even if your income goes over their limits. Instances include extraordinary expenses you may have such as child care, transportation or medical bills and the cost to obtain a private legal assistant would be way to expensive for you to afford.
