If your Whirlpool dishwasher isn't drying dishes properly, it's a sign that the heating element has gone bad. Although you could call an appliance repair person, the service call could prove to be extremely costly. If you have the time and a do-it-yourself desire, you can replace your Whirlpool dishwasher's heating element on your own and only be out the cost of the part, rather than parts and high-dollar labor. Instructions

    • 1

      Disconnect the power to the dishwasher by turning the circuit breaker off.

      Remove the toe panel on the dishwasher, using a socket wrench to unscrew the four mounting bolts. Locate the wiring harness for the heating element and disconnect it by pushing in on the plastic tab of the connector and pulling it out.

      Open the door to the Whirlpool dishwasher and remove the bottom dishrack by pulling it completely out.

      Remove the hex head screws that mount the heating element to the tub, using a socket wrench. Lift the heating element out of the three retaining clips that hold it in the tub. Remove the element from the dishwasher.

      Insert the new heating element into the dishwasher and set it within the retaining clips on the bottom of the tub. Connect the heating element to the tub by installing the mounting screws.

      Set the lower dishrack back inside the Whirlpool dishwasher and close the door. Reconnect the wiring harness to the heating element and reattach the toe panel to the Whirlpool dishwasher

Tips & Warnings

  • Take the old element with you to an appliance supply store. This way you can be sure to get a new element that matches the old one exactly.

  • Always disconnect the power supply to appliances before servicing them.
