Stretch Leather Shoes

That wonderful thing about quality leather shoes is that they stretch to conform to your feet. Let me share this with you, reader - I have big feet. It's a problem, since I travel a lot, and find that many other nations in the world simply don't stock my size. I just bought a pair of leather boots, and as expected, the toes are painfully tight...still, with just a bit of time and effort, I know they'll fit like a glove. Here's how you can stretch your leather shoes, and get them comfortable in no time.

Instructions

The simplest and safest method is to buy a shoe stretcher, which you can generally buy at the shoe store. This is best for delicate or suede shoes. If you don't have one, try the old standby of stuffing the shoes with rolled up socks or newspaper.

If the shoes are still tight, you can try the "wet" method. This involves wetting the shoes from the inside out. Then, slide them on your feet, and let them dry naturally. They will literally stretch to fit your feet perfectly!

This works because leather softens when wet. Do NOT attempt this with suede boots, or boots that are not water sealed - you WILL discolor the leather.

If you can't stand the thought of wearing wet shoes, then you can always try the ice method. Place a plastic bag inside the boots, and fill it with water. Then, stick the whole thing in the freezer. When the water freezes, the ice will expand, stretching the boots. Of course, this takes a while! You shouldn't use this method if the boots are suede or not water-sealed.

The alcohol method is similar to the water method, and may work of plain water hasn't helped. Mix rubbing alcohol with the water, and proceed as above. One part alcohol to three parts water is about right. You don't have to fill up the boots or shoes - just make sure the tight areas are well moistened.

If none of this has worked, the simple answer is to wear the leather shoes or boots until they stretch. Leather is a skin, and will naturally stretch with use.

Tips & Warnings

  • To keep the leather pliable in storage, make sure it is clean and oiled.

  • When storing your leather shoes for extended periods of time, you might want to stuff them or use a shoe tree. This will keep them from losing their shape.

  • Stretching out leather shoes can damage them. The leather can tear, or the glue or seams can come loose. Proceed with caution, especially on delicate or expensive shoes.
