Visit stores that typically carry large selections of Halloween decorations, like drugstores and mass merchants such as Target and Wal-Mart. Don't overlook bargain centers like Big Lots, either. There are various books available with all sorts of scary pumpkin patterns, and you're sure to find at least one to your liking.

Browse the Internet to find even more books. One of the best scary pumpkin pattern books available for purchase over the Web is Dig Those Decades, which offers eight vintage scary pumpkin patterns ranging from a zombie to a frightening Elvis. Patterns are rated easy to challenging. You can order the book online ($4.25, 2009 price) through the Yankee Harvest website (yankeehalloween.com). Yankee Harvest offers other pattern books as well.

Several websites let you download and print scary pumpkin patterns. Most charge a modest membership fee for unlimited access (generally around $20) or charge a one-time fee of a few dollars for immediate access to a small selection of sample patterns. Zombie Pumpkins (zombiepumpkins.com) offers 180 different scary pumpkin patterns. Among them: famous movie monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein, Pinhead and even Freddie Krueger and Jason Vorhees (of Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th fame, respectively).

There are free scary pumpkin patterns available for download. The Pumpkin Masters website (pumpkinmasters.com) has four free downloadable patterns, including one called the "Grim Creeper." You can also buy a coloring book and use some of those patterns as scary pumpkin-carving stencils.
