How to Tie a Hindu Head Scarf

First made popular by designer Kiran Rai of the fashion line Sir Alistair Rai and worn by Hollywood celebrities, Hindu prayer scarves and shawls are a hot fashion accessory. Printed or embroidered with Hindu deities, mantras or messages such as "Peace," "Love" or "Karma," the designs of these lightweight scarves are based on the traditional prayer shawls worn by Hindu pilgrims. Hindu scarves and shawls can be worn around the neck, shoulders or waist, but they also make striking headscarves.

Things You'll Need

  • Rectangular Hindu scarf, at least 36 inches by 60 inches
  • Hair band or ponytail holder

Instructions

  1. The Ponytail Tie

    • 1

Pull your hair into a ponytail, if it's long enough. Make sure the ponytail is just above the base of your skull. If your hair isn't long enough for a ponytail, the scarf will hold it back.

    • 2

Fold the scarf lengthwise, starting from the bottom, into 2- to 3-inch folds so that you have a narrow band.

    • 3

Place the middle of the scarf across your forehead and knot it at the back of your head, just above the base of your skull. If you have a ponytail, wrap the scarf around the top of the ponytail and tie a knot.

    • 4

Let the ends of the scarf hang loose down your back, over each shoulder or place both ends over one shoulder.

    The Twist Tie

    • 5

Hold the scarf behind your head lengthwise so that the top hem covers the top half of your forehead.

    • 6

Bring the sides into the middle behind your head and twist the scarf into a long rope, making sure it feels secure on your head, but not too tight.

    • 7

Tie the twisted scarf into a knot at the base of your skull. The loose ends may be worn down your back like a ponytail or over your shoulder.
