How to Install a Rockford Fosgate Amp

Rockford Fosgate, established in 1973, is one of the most well-known car audio manufacturers. Rockford Fosgate amps are used when you need to improve the output quality and power of your stereo system. Car audio accessories, such as amps, are one of the most popular modifications added to vehicles.

Things You'll Need

  • Heavy-duty screws
  • Screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Socket wrench
  • Wire cutter
  • Amp wiring kit
  • Prepare the area around the spot you want to mount the amp by clearing away objects. The best place to mount the amp is in the trunk or rear cargo area. Amplifiers emit heat, so it is best to mount the amp at least 6 inches from any plastic components. Mount the amp on the same side of the vehicle as the battery. Screw the amp through the carpet and into the rear cargo liner. Make sure the amp is secure.

  • Pop the hood and disconnect your negative battery cable. Remove the fuse from the main power cable in your installation kit and attach the cable to your positive battery terminal. Use the supplied locking nut to secure the cable.

  • Run the cable through your firewall. Locate openings that other cables are fed into. Remove the door trim panel to pull back the carpet and run the cable underneath the carpet toward the rear of the vehicle.

  • Remove the rear seat cushion to access the carpet trim underneath. Run the cable underneath the seat mounting location and into the trunk or cargo area where the amplifier is mounting. Use the wire cutter to eliminate any excess length from the cable. Use the provided wiring connectors to connect the main power cable to the amp.

  • Remove the radio head unit from your vehicle. Install the signal cables and "turn-on" cables into the radio head unit. Run the cables from the rear of the unit under the carpet to connect back to the amp. Run these cables on the opposite side of the vehicle to prevent signal interference.

  • Use the supplied ground cable to ground the amplifier. Connect the cable from the amplifier to metal, such as a bolt or nut. Remove the bolt, attach the ground and then reinstall the bolt. Reinstall the fuse in the main power cable (close to the battery terminal) and reconnect your negative battery cable. Reattach any panels you have removed to run the cables.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you choose to mount the amp under the seat, you will have to remove the seat and drill mounting holes. The ideal location is in the trunk.
