Get a teaching certificate in Georgia

Georgia allows a variety of routes to a teaching certificate. Although most teachers will have a B.A. in education, it is possible to get a valid teaching certificate without one.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Have an education. Although an Education degree isn't a must, a four year degree is. Not only that, but you must have graduated with a GPA above 2.5 to qualify for a "core academic" teaching certificate. Keep in mind that your four year degree MUST be coming from a PSC accredited school.

  2. Step 2

Pass the Basic Skills Assessment Exam. This is a test all potential teachers must take covering one to three subjects, depending on the state. The test is a simple exam used to measure competency.

  3. Step 3

Find a school system to sponsor you. Only once you have been officially hired as a teacher can your application for a teaching certificate using the core academic method be sent off and processed.

  4. Step 4

Be assigned to teach the subject your B.A. is in. If your degree is in English, you must teach English. If it is in Biology, you must teach Science. There is plenty of wiggle room for non conventional degrees, however.

  5. Step 5

Agree to teach only in grades 4-12. Teaching younger students requires special training that is not available with alternate certification.

  6. Step 6

Take and pass an Appropriate Content Assessment Exam. This merely demonstrates that you are competent in the subject you hold your degree in.

  7. Step 7

Sign all necessary application forms for your teaching certificate and allow them to be sent in by your school for processing.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't be shocked when you have to get fingerprinted and pay for a criminal records search. This is standard procedure for all new teachers in every state.
  • Be prepared to pay the fees associated with having a criminal background check and submitting a teaching certification application to the state. The school you work for may cover this cost, but they may not. Usually fees run no higher than $20 for each process.
