How to Do Home Electrolysis Safely
Home electrolysis can be an efficient, inexpensive way to get rid of body hair permanently. But doing electrolysis at home can also be a tedious endeavor for the unskilled DIY electrologist. Here are some tips that will help you get started. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Make sure that your home electrolysis system is clean, especially the small probe at the top of the pen-like device. Electrolysis must be performed in a sterile environment using sterile equipment.
-
2
Set out all your gear before you start zapping away pesky hair: tweezers, clean towels, bowl of alcohol, extra batteries (if your home electrolysis system uses these), and a strong light source.

3
Cleanse the area of body to be treated, and wash your hands with disinfectant soap. Remember the "keep it clean" rule? This definitely applies to home electrolysis, unless you adore infection and scarring.

4
Treat no more than a square inch of hair at a time. Start with a part of your body that's "safe." If performed correctly, home electrolysis is great, but again, to emphasize: There is always the chance of scarring. The probe will slip right through your skin right down next to the hair follicle; the probe is on loaded springs to prevent it from going in too deep. It takes around 20 to 30 seconds to permanently remove each hair follicle, so patience is required. You'll use the tweezers to pick out the dead hair.

5
Take a break when you need to. Place your gear on clean towels. Disinfect your tweezers with the alcohol occasionally. This is time-consuming work!
-
6
Wait a couple of days after your first home electrolysis treatment to see how your skin responds. It will be red and inflamed at first, but take careful note to make sure that there's no infection brewing.
-
7
Expect some regrowth after electrolysis. This is very common. It might be some time before you permanently remove hair in the desired area. But once you do? All of those hours of work will pay off -- and save you a lot of money.

Tips & Warnings
Electrolysis runs between $45 and $125 an hour, if performed by a skilled electrologist. If you only need a small amount of hair removed, it might be more expedient to simply seek professional services.
Never use home electrolysis to treat hair on your face. The reverse hand direction makes it very difficult to accurately get the device where it should be. Scarring on your face is the very last thing that you need!
