Things You'll Need:
- dried herbs
- jar with tight lid
-
Step 1
Making homemade potpourris only requires a good afternoon, a giant mixing bowl, and the dried herbs and other botanicals that you’d like to use. Make sure that the dried herbs are ones that you have done yourself or from a herbal supply house for the best and longest lasting potpourris. While many different types of potpourris can be made, depending on personal preferences, this is how to make ones with a spicy scent.
-
Step 2
Gather the dried herbs, flowers, seeds, or other botanical items that you want to have in your potpourri. For a spicy herbal potpourri you should consider using allspice, basil, anise, caraway, cloves, vanilla, nutmeg, and ginger.
-
Step 3
Whenever you are going to make a new mix that you’ve not done before to record the name of your mixture, the date, and the herbs that you are using in it. That way if you like it you can recreate it.
-
Step 4
Mix together one cup each of all your herbs that will go into this particular potpourri mixture. Mix it thoroughly.
-
Step 5
Get a jar with a good tight sealed lid and put the herbs in it. Store this is a cool dark place for approximately six weeks.
-
Step 6
After the six weeks time, you may put in a basket or jar, bag it up for your own use, or make it a gift by decorating the bag with ribbons and brightly colored confetti. Replace your homemade potpourri for new when the scent begins to wane.
