These steps will show you how to put together a fire plan for your family.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paper
  • Pen
  • Family Members
  • Practice
  1. Step 1

Adults should conduct a visual inspection of your home and property, inside and out, making notes of all exits, entrances, combustible materials (i.e. gas, wood, papers, etc.).

  2. Step 2

Once the inspections have been made, all family members should get together and sit down to discuss a fire evacuation plans. Be sure there are no distractions (i.e. tv, phones, computers, etc.).

  3. Step 3

Everyone should have a task in the event of a fire. For example, a child can dial 911 while an older sibling can assist in the evacuation efforts.

  4. Step 4

It is very important that the family practice a "fire drill" at least once a month at different times of the day and night. The family should do a walk through of the home pointing out the exits and secondary exits. Make sure you discuss with the family where to meet outside so everyone can be accounted for.

  5. Step 5

Discuss where valuables and important documents are kept in case they have to be retrieved. This is of course assuming someone can retrieve them safely. If you must absolutely retrieve anything, retrieve insurance papers, certificates, or anything of informational value. I strongly suggest that papers and valuables be placed in a fire retardant safe.

  6. Step 6

The number one priority of the plan is to get everyone out safely! Once you have exited the home, do not re-enter! Wait for fire and police officials to arrive.

  7. Step 7

I strongly encourage you install smoke alarm detectors and a fire alarm system. You should also go the extra mile and install a carbon monoxide detectors. Be sure you check them frequently to ensure they are working properly and that you have fresh batteries on hand.

  8. Step 8

Have at least two fire extinguishers in the home. Make sure everyone knows how to use them. If not, your local dealer or fire department will show you. If the fire is too big evacuate, do not attempt to put the fire out yourself.

  9. Step 9

Keep your family safe and have a fire plan ready!
