If you sew and wear blouses or shirts, you can sew a few simple seams in a blouse for less ironing.

Why do we need to iron a shirt or blouse? Many are a permanent press fabric or require very little ironing, but the front facing is usually wrinkled when they come out of the dryer.

Here's how to sew a few seams on a blouse or shirt for less ironing.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a blouse or shirt that wrinkles at the front facing
  • a sewing machine
  • thread to match
  1. Step 1

Find a shirt or blouse that wrinkles at the front facing, and press the facing flat. Enjoy it. This may be the last time you ever have to do this.

  2. Step 2
Start sewing across from the collar

Place the shirt under the presser foot wrong side up with the facing in place as it is when you wear it. Be sure that it is flat. Start sewing across from the collar, not at the shoulder seam.

  3. Step 3

Keep the facing flat and in line with the blouse as you sew to the bottom. It is important to have this lined up correctly to sew a purchased blouse for less ironing.

  4. Step 4

Sew the other side of the blouse or shirt the same way, starting across from the collar. You will know you did this correctly when there are no puckers, and the facing lies perfectly flat against the outer blouse fabric.

You have learned how to sew two simple seams in a purchased blouse for less ironing for the life of the garment. This works particularly well for children's clothing, and you have less ironing.

Tips & Warnings
  • Sew these seams when the shirt or blouse is new, or work through the closet with your favorites. Sort by color before you start, and save changing thread for each one.
