Things You'll Need:
- Band or Musical Group
- Professional Press Kit
-
Step 1
The first step in contacting a record label is to research any labels that you are interested in submitting music to. You can do this research online through the label's website.
-
Step 2
Next, you need to carefully examine their music submission policy, also available online. SOme labels want music through mp3s, some want myspace, some want physical copies, and some just do not want submissions at all. Read and comply with the label submission standards.
-
Step 3
If there are vague or no submission standards you should put together and send a standard music industry press kit. The kit should include a full page photograph, a one sheet bio, and a 3 song demo with your best song first. Other material could include tour dates, press clippings, and awards or CDs sold.

Step 4
Finally, be persistent but not a nuisance and think of ways to promote your music on your own so you can decide whether a record label is right for your band.
