How to Use NTP

Network time protocol (NTP) is a communication method that syncs computers over the network. NTP syncs the time so all computers on the network do not have incorrect clock values. Improper time stamps on files and folders can cause a problem for network administrators, so NTP is used to keep all clients up to the second.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the time on the remote computer. The following command checks the time on the server used as the synchronization computer: net time \\server
Replace "server" with the name of the net time server.

    • 2

Sync the time of the client machine to the server. If this is a domain, type in the following command: net time \\server /domain:myDomain. This command connects the client machine to a domain server.

    • 3

Check the synchronization. After the time server has been synchronized, you can test the settings by typing the following into the command prompt: net time \\server /querysntp. This command returns the value of the server to check that it matches the client machine.
