How to Compare Bicycles

Bicycles are a cheap, environmentally friendly and healthy mode of transportation. In addition to being a good way to get around, riding a bike can be an entertaining way to experience nature, see a city and get some exercise. Buying a bike can be a big decision, as there are several different types of bikes and a wide price range. It's important to determine what you want in a bike and weigh all your options.

Determine the primary reason you are buying the bike. By figuring out where and when and why you will be riding the bike, you can determine which type of bike is best for you. If you will use the bike primarily on rugged terrain, or off-road use, for example, a mountain bike is the best choice for you. Road bikes are faster than all other types, with skinny tires, and are made for riding on smooth, paved surfaces. Riders lean forward more on these bikes to increase speed, and some beginning riders may be uncomfortable with this because of the speed and riding position. For casual riders or those who use a bike for relatively short commutes, hybrids or comfort bikes and cruisers offer a more comfortable riding experience but slower speed.

Set your budget. You can spend anywhere from $50 to thousands of dollars on a bicycle, depending on the quality of the bike and whether you buy it new or used. For some casual riders, a cheaper or used bike may be a good option. If you plan on being a more serious rider, you should invest in something more expensive. Factors like weight, materials and type of bike all affect the price. For example, lightweight bikes cost more. No matter whether you decide to purchase a new or used bike, it is best to go to a store that specializes in bikes, rather than a big box discount store. At bicycle shops, you will get more specific, expert support and advice when purchasing a bike.

Size the bike. One of the most important things about buying a bike is making sure it feels good when you ride it. The first step to finding a bike that feels good is to make sure it is the right size for you. Straddle the bike's frame with your feet spread about shoulder's length apart. There should still be about 1 to 2 inches between you and the bike frame when you do this. Keep in mind that the store clerk can help to adjust the seat and find a bike that fits you.

Take it for a test drive. Along the lines of finding a bike that fits you, the way you feel when riding it is equally important. Most shops will let you take the bike for a test ride if you leave an ID or other piece of collateral. As you ride the bike, try shifting several times and braking to get a feel for all the features of the bike. If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't the bike for you.
