For most vehicles, lumbar support is built into the car's seats. However, sometimes the support that is there is not quite sufficient enough for you. This can be especially true if you spend a lot of time driving in your vehicle, or if you have existing back problems. The lumbar region is the area between the middle back and lower back. To remedy back pain from lack of proper lumbar support, an option would be to add a lumbar support cushion to your seat.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • lumbar support cushion
  1. Step 1

Decide which type of cushion to buy. Lumbar cushions come in full or half. A full pillow supports the entire portion of your lower back, while a half pillow supports just the small of your back. Either one is fine for adding more support; it's just a matter of preference and how much room you want the pillow to take up.

  2. Step 2

Purchase your cushion. You can find lumbar support cushions at a drugstore, such as Walgreens, or a mass merchandiser like Wal-mart. You can also purchase lumbar support cushions online. However, it may be easier to buy in-store because you don't have to wait for shipping, and returns and exchanges are easier.

  3. Step 3

Remove the cushion from its packaging and place in your car's seat. The best way to do this is by directly placing the cushion on your lower back before you get in your car, then sit down, and adjust the cushion as necessary. You can also sit in your car first, and squeeze the cushion in between your back and the seat, however this may take more time to adjust it so it fits properly.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the cushion doesn't fit properly, or doesn't feel comfortable, consider purchasing a different type.
  • Leave the cushion in a safe place inside the car, away from sunlight and heat.
