1
Identify safe areas of your home, and make sure each family member knows what they are. Interior corners of your home are best. Ensure that your safe areas are not near windows. Also keep these areas free from objects that may fall off the wall or nearby shelves.
-
2
List people to contact in case of an emergency. Include at least two contact people that live out of state, if possible. In case of a major quake, you likely won't be able to contact the local people on your list immediately.

3
Have battery operated flashlights available throughout your home, and make sure each family member knows where they are. Also there are plug-in lights that are designed to go on when the power goes off.
-
4
Make a list of essential supplies and keep these stocked in your home at all times. Store food that does not need to be refrigerated and enough water to last at least three to five days. Also keep a battery-operated radio and enough essential medications for one to two weeks.

Conduct earthquake drills regularly. Practice what you will do when an earthquake begins by moving to your closest safe spot, ducking, and placing your arms over your head. Count slowly to 50, then evacuate through the closest exit. If you are on the second floor, practice assisting family members that need help down the stairs.
