Make a Zine Using Microsoft Works

Zines are self-published works that can come in many forms: magazines, newsletters, booklets or newspapers. They can contain text, images, news, comics or reviews. Originally, zines were produced using photocopiers, but today they can be made cost effectively using a computer and a word processing program like Microsoft Works. When completed, the zine can be printed or distributed electronically.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the "Start" button and choose "All Programs." Click on the "Microsoft Works" folder and choose "Task Launcher."

    • 2

Click on the "Templates" tab located on the top of the page. Choose "Newsletters and Flyers" from the left-hand pane. Select a template design that will best suit your zine from the right-hand pane and click on it.

    • 3

Click on the text areas and begin typing to replace the space-saver text with your own text. Edit the font style, size and color using the options in the style tool bar. Add columns to your zine by clicking on "Page Layout" and choosing "Columns."

Click "Insert" on the main tool bar to add graphics to your zine. Choose "Picture from file" to add an image that you have saved on your hard drive. Choose "Clip Art" to add clip art graphics. Choose "Shapes" to add simple shapes like arrows, balloons or stars.

Save your zine by clicking on "File" and choosing "Save as." You can choose to save your zine as a Works document or as a template that can be used again by opening the pull-down menu under "Save as Type."
