Use CuteFTP With an iPhone

CuteFTP is a software program for customizing an iPhone--such as adding skins to Safari, changing the look of icons and adding slider controls to apps. It can be installed on an iPhone, but only if it has been jailbroken (i.e., hacked to allow for modifications not approved of by Apple).

Instructions

    • 1

Open "Install" on the jailbroken iPhone and check that you have Community Sources and BBD Subsystem installed. Go to "Install", scroll to "System" and scroll to "OpenSSH". Install OpenSSH.

    • 2

Go to "All Packages" and scroll to "Services" and install it, Then exit, unlock, and open "Services" to see that SSH is on. Exit.

    • 3

Download either the Mac or PC version of CuteFTP Pro from the appropriate website. Click on the program when it has finished downloading to install it.

    • 4

Go to the top left of CuteFTP and click "File", then "New", and finally "SFTP". Label the iPhone. Type in the IP address of the iPhone in the "Host" address area. The information for this can be gotten by going to the iPhone's "Settings," then "WiFi", and clicking the arrow near the IP address.

    • 5

Type in root for user name and then alpine for password. Now go to the iPhone's "Settings," then, in the "General" tab, set auto-lock to "Never" so it won't go to sleep.

    • 6

Now click "Connect" on CuteFTP and give it a few minutes to load. Click "Yes" when asked. When done, there will be a folder called either "Library" or "Library+Media", depending upon the firmware being used.

Tips & Warnings

  • While Apple has maintained that jailbreaking is illegal, with the exception of voiding the warranty if presented to Apple, a user can do whatever he/she wants to the phone since it is officially the user's property. Apple does claim that those making the jailbroken apps are infringing on their copyright, but this issue does not apply to the iPhone owner. The debate rages on.
