How to Make Satin Banquet Chair Covers for a Reception

If you are a party planner or run a catering business, making your own satin banquet chair covers for receptions will ultimately save you the expense of renting them in the long run. Most common banquet folding chairs are the same size, allowing you to launder and reuse the chair covers many times. This project is a basic pattern with straight easy edges, making it simple and time effective to sew chair covers in multiples.

  • Folding banquet chair

Instructions

    • 1

Measure from the top of the chairback to the seat, across the seat and down to the floor using a measuring tape. Add an inch for seam allowance and hem. This is the length of the front chair panel. Measure the width of the chair at its widest point and add 1 inch. Cut the front panel from the satin fabric, using these measurements and pinking shears. The pinking shears will help prevent the satin from fraying.

    • 2

Measure from the top back of the chair to the floor and add an inch for seam allowance and hem. This is the length of the back panel. Cut the back panel from the satin fabric using the chairback length measurement by the chair-width measurement.

    • 3

Place the two panels together with the right sides facing. Match and pin the short edges together on one end of the panels. Sew the pinned edges using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Measure from the top of the chairback to the seat and pin to that point. Sew the pinned edges using a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

    • 4

Slip the sewn panels over the chair back and allow the long front panel to drape over the front of the chair. Note: Do not turn the sewn panels right-side out. Measure from the bottom end of the sewn chairback side seam to the front of the chair and add 1 inch for the chair side panel width. Measure from the seat to the floor and add 1 inch for the chair side panel length. Cut two satin chair side panels with these measurements.

    • 5

Pin a side panel to the seat portion of the front panel and the front draped portion of the panel with the right sides together. The back edge of the chair side panel and the bottom are not pinned. Repeat for the other side of the satin chair cover. Slip the cover off the chair and sew the pinned edges using a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

    • 6

Fold over all the raw edges a 1/4 inch and iron, using a pressing cloth to protect the satin fabric. Fold the edges over a 1/4 inch again and press. Pin the folded edges and topstitch a hem around the bottom and side openings on the chair cover to finish.
