Making paper mache piñatas is easy and saves money when created at home. I have made these types of piñatas for my children's birthday parties. They were easy to make, fill and break.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

First you want to connect balloons of various sizes to create your final product. This can be done with tape, string, or the balloons themselves.

  2. Step 2

Then you want to cut the news paper into several strips, they can vary in size. I like to cut my strips into an approximate 3 inch by 8 inch strip.

  3. Step 3

You then want to create the flour mixture. I like to mix about 2 cups of water with about 4 cups of flour. Mix it till it looks the consistency of pancake mix, which is pretty smooth.

  4. Step 4

Finally you want to dip the strips of paper into the mixture and remove the excess mixture by sliding fingers down the strip of paper. Place the wet strips of paper onto the balloons to create the shape preferred. The more layers added to the balloons the harder it is to break. Once done layering on the wet paper strips, allow to dry. Drying time can very, depending on how many layers are put on.

  5. Step 5

Once the cast of the shape dries, a needle can be inserted to pop the balloons within the cast. Thread a rope from the top of the cast to the bottom of the cast. The bottom of the rope can be either tied into a large knot or tied onto a small stick of your choosing. This will hold up the piñata when pulled away from the children. I use tissue paper to decorate the outside of my piñatas. I have also seen others use acrylic paints. After the cast is decorated, fill with candy and treats, hand on a tree and let the kids have fun!

Tips & Warnings
  • The stick can be purchased as a dowel at a lumber store and decorated (it is cheaper).
  • Using a pulley to slide the piñata up and down is much easier on your hands
  • Do not heavily fill a thin piñata
  • Make sure all children are out of the way of another child's swing!
  • Inform the children not to let go of the stick
  • As soon as candy flies, remove the stick from the child. This way children retrieving candy will not accidentally get hit.
