Finding a job after college graduation used to be easier, but with the scarcity of positions available at the present time, many of the college graduates from last year do not yet have employment. There was a time that companies came to campus to interview graduating students. The new college graduate must put forth extra effort to find a job. This article may help you find a job with your new college degree.

Things You'll Need:

  • just your computer
  • your good sense
  • an interest in finding a job
  1. Step 1

Develop a plan. You can find a job as a new college graduate, even in a poor employment market. Decide where you would be willing to work, the kinds of positions you would be suited for, and think through how you might be able to find a job in the locale you would prefer.

  2. Step 2

Develop plan B. This is an alternate plan if you do not find a job in the field of your choice, in the area you would like, doing a job you feel qualified to do as a new college graduate.

  3. Step 3

Prepare a skeleton of your Resume and have it on an accessible computer and on a thumb key so it can be updated just about anywhere. Use a website with information for help in preparing a resume, so you can follow the latest trends and techniques. See Resources below.

  4. Step 4

Start a job search. Look at some websites that are most likely to help you find a job. You probably know about monster and the common sites. Try an after college site, where you can put possible jobs in a basket and send resumes to companies that are friendly to new college graduates. See Resources below.

  5. Step 5

Look at other job sites like Indeed that have jobs by State. Go to the bottom of the page and click on BROWSE JOBS. You can then click on a State and browse the jobs for ideas. Once you know something you are interested in, use the general search and see what else is available there.

  6. Step 6

Find the website for your State Employment Office. Some states call this Workforce and some of the websites are workforce names. Complete the application online if it is available, and submit your resume for positions you believe may help you get a job. Do not forget to apply for internship jobs, too, as they are often ideal for a new college graduate.

  7. Step 7

Remember to network with all your friends, both college and high school. Let them know you are in the market for a job, and ASK if they have any ideas, know of any positions, or if their parents may know of open positions. This is usually a good way to find a job as a new college graduate.

  8. Step 8

Keep a record of each position you apply for. Update the status every ten days, and if you hear nothing, give them a telephone call or send an email inquiring as to the status of your application. With enough applications out there, and with some persistence, you should find a job as a new college graduate.

Keep the faith. Remember, you only need one job.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to keep a record of all costs relating to your job search. It is likely that you may be able to use the expenses on your income tax return.
