Step 1
Remember that less is better than more. Get rid of everything that drains you. Think about how much time you really want to invest taking care of the home. Just because an item has value doesn't mean you have to keep it. Just because you like something doesn't mean you have to own it or hold onto it for the rest of your life once you've bought it. We all have many things we like, if we brought everything back with us, our homes would soon be filled and we'd have to store, vacuum around, dust, maintain, and repair it all. Is it really worth the time and effort? Make sure you own your stuff and that it doesn't own you. Too much of a good thing can wear a person down.
-
Step 2
Its time to challenge the idea that cheaper is better. Cheaper is cheaper. A few quality items are better than an abundance of fake plastic and particle board ones. Take the objects that you really need and use them as a platform for art to make your environment more enjoyable. For example, instead of just buying the plain old cheapest tea pot, plunk down a few extra bucks to get the funky artsy one or the one with the color that matches your kitchen instead. This satisfies your need for style without having to add a bunch of extra items to decorate your home.
-
Step 3
Only place items in your space that represent the real you. Don't decorate to impress, decorate to express.
-
Step 4
Open space is better. We can play in space, think in space, and walk safely in space. In crowded areas we bang into things, step on and trip over things, stub our toes on things and get stressed looking at the mess of things. Sure, we have stuff ... but do we have the true wealth of space?
-
Step 5
Have one or two favorite items in each room and don't over-decorate.
-
Step 6
Avoid heavy drapes that collect dust and are hard to clean. Opt for easy clean window coverings like blinds, sheers, or curtains instead. Make sure flooring, walls, bedding, etc. are all aimed towards being easy to clean and maintain. Keep furniture simple with clean lines. Avoid fancy turnings or carvings that collect dust. Choose quality fabrics that resist wear.
