How to Perform American Kenpo Yellow Belt Techniques - Delayed Sword thumbnail
The Delayed Sword is a technique for the yellow belt in Kenpo.

The name Delayed Sword is derived from two aspects of the technique: a delayed effect from a kick and a hand sword. A hand sword is a strike in which the hand is flat and the fingers are together. Delayed Sword is used in response to a right-handed grapple attempt or strike attempt by an opponent. Its theme revolves around the effectiveness of retreat to increase the gap between you and your opponent.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw your left foot back to place your body into a position of readiness. As your weight balances on both legs, execute a right, hammering inner block, with the bottom of your fist, to your opponent's incoming right, inner forearm. Keep your left hand at a ready, defensive position.

    • 2

Draw your weight back on your left leg while lifting and drawing back your right foot to a position suitable for a kicking strike.

    • 3

Execute a snapping ball kick, as if you are kicking a sports ball, to your opponent's groin or bladder. This will cause him to keel over and reduce the height of his stance. This causes severe pain and mental confusion. Keep both of your hands in a ready, defensive position.

    • 4

Execute a hand sword technique outward, downward and diagonally with your right hand to the right side of your opponent's neck or just below their right ear. This causes him pain and temporary mental confusion.

    • 5

Return to a defensive posture with your left hand guarding your lower body and your right hand guarding your upper body. Retreat and reopen the gap between you and your opponent.
