If your lawn doesn't seem to be thriving, you might want to consider lawn aeration. Lawn aeration is one of the best ways to keep your lawn healthy, while promoting growth. Aeration can be done in a number of different ways. This article will give you some tips on how to aerate your lawn.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • aeration device
  • worms
  • patience
  1. Step 1

If you are having difficulty keeping your lawn green, be sure to rule out any other causes. These causes can include brown patch disease, lack of water, grubs or lack of lawn maintenance. Once these are ruled out, you should certainly attempt to aerate your lawn- but keep in mind that lawn aeration is not only for an unhealthy lawn. Lawn aeration can help maintain a healthy green lawn.

  2. Step 2

You can purchase special sandals that slip on over your shoes that are used to aerate lawns. These sandals have spikes at the bottom, to penetrate the earth to allow air and water to reach the roots easily. Take a walk around your lawn with these sandals (or golf shoes) and you will have a simple aeration technique.

  3. Step 3

You can try using a spudder, or plugger, which removes small plugs of grass from your lawn. This will certainly provide aeration, but can leave uneven terrain, and a mess.

  4. Step 4

There are organic liquid aerators that you can use. These lawn aeration solvents contain chemicals that will break down the earth around the lawn, allowing water and nutrients to sink deep into the ground, so that they can be absorbed by the roots of the grass.
