Step 1
Give your cat its own personal space. Cats are pretty independent and territorial, and won't feel safe or comfortable if you're constantly invading their territory. They can learn to live in small spaces but you have to respect your cat's need to be alone sometimes. One of those cat houses, a corner with a small rug, or even a box that they call their own gives them a place to go when they want to sleep or be left alone.
-
Step 2
Make the time and effort to get to know your cat. This may sound strange, but every cat likes to interact with people differently. For example, my cat loves to be brushed with a cat brush, but hates to be held or picked up. She enjoys the occasional ball of string, but gets frightened by cat toys that make sounds. Try different ways of interacting with your cat and see how they react. If you find they love a certain toy, set aside 5-10 minutes each day to play with them. You'll find it relaxes you, and you and your cat will get to spend a little quality time together.
-
Step 3
Don't leave food out for your cat. Instead keep a bowl of clean water in the same place so when he's thirsty, he knows where to go. Get into the habit of feeding your cat at the same times each day, and let him go to you when he's hungry. Cats give off a unique whiny meow when they want to be fed. Feed your cat when he asks so that he knows you're the one to go to when he's hungry.
-
Step 4
Keep your cat healthy. Take her to the vet each year, pay attention to her diet, and make sure she's getting enough exercise. Cats can take care of themselves for the most part, but rely on you for their overall health. If your cat is feeling sick, he is more likely to pull away, rather than want to be closer to you. Spend at least 20 minutes each day with your cat to observe him for unusual behavior, any loss of appetite, unusual changes in weight, loss of fur, fatigue, etc... Also, make sure to keep your cat's litter box clean to prevent any illnesses caused by poor sanitation. And don't let him drink out of the toilet or outdoor puddles.
-
Step 5
Lastly, do everything you can to make your cat feel happy and safe in your home. Sharing space can be stressful for animals, so do your best to make your cat feel relaxed. When he's trying to sleep, don't disturb him. When he's annoyed, guide him to his personal area, and leave him alone until he comes out by his own free will. When your cat jumps on your lap, pet him gently and relax, so he doesn't sense any nervous vibes. If your cat does something he shouldn't be doing, like scratching your favorite chair, don't yell as that will only frighten him. Instead buy him a scratching post, and encourage him to use it. Keep in mind that most cats are scared by loud noises. Yelling will only teach them to fear you instead of to trust you. Leave lemon peels where you don't want your cat to stay, the smell bothers them and they'll leave without you having to shout at them. Keep in mind, cats are animals, not people, and they will destroy things, throw up on your floor, and shed on your couch. Cleaning up is just one part of having a pet. But in return for your efforts your cat will offer companionship and even a good laugh every now and then.
