How to Reduce Your Wedding Invitation Coststhumbnail
Save money by scaling back on your wedding invitations.

Weddings are a commemoration of two people coming together as one. They're a time for celebration, romance -- and, often, spending lots of money. From booking a venue to hiring a photographer, weddings can cost a pretty penny. But there are ways to save money on each element of a wedding, including the invitations. Many aspects of wedding invitations can be scaled back, or even omitted altogether. By cutting some extras and putting together the invitations yourself, you can save a bundle.

    Instructions

Forget the extra envelope. Whether you're making the invitations yourself, or ordering them from a print shop, the extra envelope isn't a necessity. Even though it's traditionally included, it's an extra expense that adds little or nothing to your special day.

Scale back on the RSVPs. Have your guests respond by postcard instead. By including this in your invitation, you'll not only save postage -- it's cheaper to mail postcards) -- but you'll also save because you won't have to include an RSVP envelope. You can save even more money by having your guests RSVP to your wedding website, to an e-mail address or by phone. Be sure to include this information on your invitation.

Shop for invitations on-line. Retail stores have huge markups to cover the costs of employees, rent and utilities. On-line stores can often save you money because they don't have these added costs. By shopping on-line, you may be able to find invitations than cost significantly less than those found in retail stores.

Purchase a wedding invitation kit. These can be bought either on-line or in Big Box stores such as Wal-Mart, Target or Staples. The kits include stationery, as well as software that allows you to design the invitations yourself. Best of all, the invitations are comparable to those purchased from a stationery store.

Use electronic invitations, or "evites." While these may not be as traditional or tangible as real invitations, they cost significantly less. In fact, you may even be able to find some for free.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Since invitation pricing is based on quantity, include some extra invitations with your order to allow for last-minute guests and to have a few for mementos. Ordering a small amount later will be costly and you will incur additional shipping charges.

    • Take advantage of the option to order a few extra envelopes if available so you are prepared for any addressing mistakes.

    • Some invitation styles allow the option of a corner copy - 3-4 lines that appear in the bottom left or right corner usually in a smaller sized font for a small fee. This option is cheaper than having separate reception cards printed.
