Starting a candle making business requires a capital investment of $150 to $500. This home based business can generate annual revenue of $10,000. Clearly this business will not make you rich. However, it is a profitable hobby. A candle making business requires no staff. After selling just a few candles, most business owners recoup start up costs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn the craft. Make a commitment to learn a skilled trade. Read candle making books. Be creative.

  2. Step 2

Determine specialty. Choose between hand dipped, beeswax, honeycomb, and confectionary, molded and decorative candles.

  3. Step 3

Purchase supplies. Obtain wax, molds, scented oils, wicks, and flowers. Buy only supplies needed to make your specialty candles. Most supplies can be purchased from local craft stores and grocery stores. Ordering supplies from online vendors is also an option.

  4. Step 4

Make brochures. Take pictures of your candle creations. Use a computer to create brochures. Include several candle pictures along with prices. List your contact information.

  5. Step 5

Sell candles. Purchase booth space at craft shows and festivals. Arrange candles neatly on display tables. When purchases are made, place brochures in bags. This may generate repeat business. Do not place brochures on table at craft shows. This may deter customers from buying right then. Keep brochures handy to distribute to potential customers that indicate interest but inability to purchase right away.

  6. Step 6

Make retail connections. Contact specialty store owners. Offer wholesale prices for your candles. Offering the store owner the opportunity to display your candles on consignment is another option. This eliminates the risks of the store owner. Contact craft distributors. Provide sample candles for display.

  7. Step 7

Be careful. Wax is highly flammable. Follow safety precautions that you should learn when reading candle making books.
