How to Survive Your First Day on the Job
-
1
Arrive on time. Being late on your first day just starts the whole day off on a bad note. Leave extra early from your house to make sure you get to the office on time. You never know when there will be a traffic jam or other inconvenience that could slow you down.
-
2
Dress professionally and conservatively. It's better to be overdressed on your first day. Take a few days to figure out what the standard office dress is.
-
-
3
Smile and introduce yourself to others. Be friendly. Ask about your co-workers' jobs and interests. Knowing something about your officemates will help you remember their names.
-
4
Ask questions. It's better to do something right the first time than to have to do it over.
-
5
Avoid complaining about your previous job or your previous boss.
-
6
Don't get involved in office gossip.
-
7
Be flexible. Your new workplace won't be like your old one. Be ready for surprises.
-
8
Take your lunch hour for yourself. Give yourself some space and some time to breathe and rest. The first day on a job is stressful.
-
9
Don't panic. Remind yourself of the reasons why you took a new job. Focus on the positive.
