uTorrent is a torrent tracking and downloading utility application. A torrent is a small file containing peer-to-peer tracking (file storing) information. uTorrent may be used to access and download torrent files. Once a torrent file is downloaded, uTorrent will follow the torrent trackers in the torrent file to download the entire installation package or ISO file listed for the torrent. To configure uTorrent to operate through a router, a special uTorrent port must be assigned and opened.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Download a sample torrent file, if needed. Free and legal movie trailer torrents may be downloaded from You Torrent. (See Resources)

  2. Step 2

Download the uTorrent application installation package from the uTorrent website. (See Resources)

  3. Step 3

Double-click the uTorrent installation package to begin the installation.

  4. Step 4

Verify the installation folder. To change the installation folder, click the "Browse" button and navigate to the correct folder for installation.

  5. Step 5

Click the "Next" button to continue. A progress bar will appear to monitor the installation.

  6. Step 6

Click the "Finish" button once the progress bar has completed to 100 percent.

  7. Step 7

Log onto the router administration interface. The IP for the router interface will be listed in the product manual for the router. In most cases, the IP address for the router administration interface will be 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.

  8. Step 8

Enter the router administrator user id and password when prompted.

  9. Step 9

Click the "Port Forwarding / Port Triggering" link on the main page of the router administration interface.

  10. Step 10

Check the listed open ports for an entry for uTorrent. An entry should be created and a port opened for uTorrent during the software installation process.

  11. Step 11

If no uTorrent entry is listed, create on by first clicking the radio button next to the Port Forwarding option.

  12. Step 12

Click on "Add Custom Service" button. Select the uTorrent entry in the Service Name dropdown box.

  13. Step 13

Enter the number 20667 in the Starting Port number input box and in the Ending Port number input box.

  14. Step 14

Assign an unused IP address on your network to the uTorrent service by entering the new IP address into the IP address input boxes.

  15. Step 15

Test the uTorrent configuration by double-clicking on a torrent file. The uTorrent program will open the torrent and show the trackers listed for the torrent files.
