How to Configure FTP Access

How to Configure FTP Access thumbnail
FTP access allows file uploads and downloads on a remote server.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) software allows you to connect to a web server to upload local files to a designated folder and download or change remote files. Unlike file managers provided by some web hosts for FTP management, you can select all the files or folders you want to upload, download, delete or move all at once with a few clicks of your mouse. The following tutorial assumes you already have FTP software installed.

Instructions

  1. Configuring FTP Access in FileZilla

    • 1

Open FileZilla, and go to "File>Site Manager." Select the "New Site" button, and select "Rename" to rename it.

    • 2

Click on the "General" tab, and add the host (domain name), port number (default is 21), server type (usually FTP), logon type, user information and password.

    • 3

Click on the "Advanced" tab to specify the default local and remote directories. Place a check mark beside "Use synchronized browser" if you'd like to view the same local and remote folders during the FTP process.

    • 4

Select the "Transfer settings" tab to set the transfer mode to default, active or passive.

    • 5

Click on the "Charset" tab to set the encoding the server uses for file name. Choose "Autodetect" to let the FTP software detect it for you. Click on "OK" to accept the FTP configurations.

    Configuring FTP Access in Dreamweaver

    • 6

Open Dreamweaver, and select "Site>Manage Sites" from the menu. In the "Manage Sites" dialog box, select "New" and "Site."

    • 7

Click on the "Advanced" tab, and add the site name (domain name). Select "Local Info" for the category.

    • 8

Select the folder icon for "Local root folder," and navigate to the local folder where your web page files are located. Leave the check mark for "Refresh local file list automatically."

    • 9

Navigate to the default images folder or leave it blank and add the website address in the "HTTP address" box. Select "Remote Info" under category and pick FTP for "Access."

    • 10

Add the FTP host, host directory (optional, example: "www", "public_html"), login information and password. Dreamweaver will place a check mark by "Save" to save it in the system. Leave it checked for easy FTP access.

    • 11

Click on the "Test" button. You will receive a successful confirmation if the FTP is configured properly. Choose "OK" to accept the configurations.
