Coloring your hair is a great way to cover gray or change your look. Whether done professionally or at home, it is an investment of time and money. Fading color is one of the most common problems you will encounter. You can protect your investment by caring for your hair properly; the results will be more healthy and vibrant-looking tresses.

Tips for Keeping Your Color Bright

  1. Step 1

Use a color protective shampoo and conditioner. There are brands for color-treated hair available in salons and grocery, drug and discount stores. Costs vary but there are some available to fit every budget.

  2. Step 2

Avoid direct exposure to the sun. The ultraviolet rays of the sun will cause color to fade. If you must be outside, wear a hat or scarf or use hair-care products with UV filters designed to create a protective shield on hair.

  3. Step 3

Limit time in the pool. Chlorinated water can have an adverse effect on color-treated hair. When swimming, use a swim or bathing cap. Always rinse your hair as soon as possible after getting out of the pool, then shampoo and condition with the products suggested in Step 1.

  4. Step 4

Consult a hair-care professional, particularly if your hair has been colored, straightened or permed before. Salon professionals are trained to know not only what color may suit you best, but what color products will last longer for your hair type and situation.

  5. Step 5

Get your hair trimmed regularly. Your hair will look better minus any damaged or faded ends.

  6. Step 6

Keep your hair moisturized. Regular use of a hair mask or hot-oil treatment will keep your hair healthy and looking shiny. Consult the products' instructions for appropriate frequency for your hair type.

  7. Step 7

Do not shampoo your hair more than necessary. Colored hair should be shampooed only three times per week for optimum color retention.
