The Firebird was a classic American sports car built by General Motors and sold under the Pontiac brand from 1967 to 2002. The Firebird uses a dual headlight switch that includes the dimmer built into the same panel. Replacing the dimmer switch requires replacing the entire panel, including the headlight switch.

Instructions

    • 1

Pop the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable for safety. You will be handling electrical components, so disconnecting the battery cable will protect you from electrical shock.

    • 2

Remove the trim panel to the left of the steering wheel that holds the dimmer and headlight switch and set it aside.

    • 3

Remove the screws mounting the dimmer/headlight switch. Unplug the electrical connection from the rear and discard the faulty switch.

    • 4

Plug the electrical connector into the new switch panel. Mount the panel in the same position as the old one and replace the trim panel. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

Tips & Warnings

  • If purchasing a used dimmer/headlight switch, make sure it is compatible with your Firebird. Different year models sometimes have different requirements. The Chevrolet Camaro and the Pontiac Firebird use the same dimmer switch and replacement requires the same procedure.
