A faulty fuel pump can cause erratic starting, low engine output or even leave you stranded by the side of the road. With a few simple tools, you can have your Lexus ES300's fuel pump replaced in no time.
Things You'll Need
- Regular screwdriver
- Phillips screwdriver
- Set of metric sockets
- Torque wrench
- Replacement fuel pump
- Fuel pump gasket
Disconnect the ground cable from the negative battery terminal.
Take out the rear seat.
Remove the fuel pump cover and fuel filler cap.
Disconnect both the outlet pipe and the return hose from the pump bracket. Disconnect the electrical wire.
Loosen all eight screws, then remove the fuel pump/bracket assembly. Be sure to remove the old gasket.
Use a new gasket when reinstalling the fuel pump. Slide the pump into position and tighten the screws to 35 inch-pounds.
Reconnect the fuel line and the return hose to the pump housing. Tighten the bolts to 22 foot-pounds.
Reconnect the electrical wire. Reinstall the fuel pump cover and the rear seat cushion.
Reconnect the ground cable to the negative battery terminal.
Tips & Warnings
- Release the fuel system pressure by loosening the connection at the pressure regulator before servicing the fuel system. After you're done, make sure to check for any leaks.
- Gasoline is highly flammable. Be cautious when working with gasoline around and sources of heat or spark such as power tools, shop lights or space heaters. Gasoline vapors are highly toxic. Awlays work in a well-ventilated area.
