How To Change BIOS Settings on a Compaq Presario 2275

The Compaq Presario 2275 is a rather unusual system by today's standards. At the time of its build, there had been no standardization as to how to enter BIOS, otherwise known as CMOS or Setup. To complicate matters, while many computer manufacturers were displaying a message during the boot-up sequence that stated which key would provide access to setup, Compaq opted for its logo to be displayed instead.

Instructions

  1. Compaq Presario 2275 BIOS Settings

    • 1

Enter BIOS by repeatedly pressing the "F10" key after powering on the system, pressing the key once about every half a second beginning when you hear the system "POST" beep. As this is an old system with the typically installed CPU a 333-Mhz and the maximum CPU speed a 450-Mhz processor, this process could take two to three minutes. If you see the system booting its operating system, normally Win95 or Win98, reboot the system by pressing the "Crtl," "Alt," and "Delete" keys at the same time or power the system down and turn it back on. Repeat the F10 key-press process until you gain access to the BIOS.

    • 2

Select the menu choice from the main BIOS blue screen using the right and left arrow keys. Pull down the menu by hitting the "Enter" key or using a down arrow key.

    • 3

Navigate through the menus and submenus using the up and down arrow keys to move through the menu choice. Select a submenu by highlighting it and pressing the "Enter" key.

    • 4

Select the Storage menu for access to the drive-configuration tree. This allows for hard-drive configurations, CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive settings and "Legacy" Diskette settings. The Security menu choice will allow you to set BIOS password protection. The Power and Advanced menus provide the rest of your options.

    • 5

Save the changes you have made and exit BIOS by pressing the "F10" key. You will be asked to confirm this choice by hitting the "Enter" key. Press "Esc" if you wish to leave BIOS without saving any of the settings. With either choice, the system will begin the boot process.
