How to Design Picture Frames
A picture frame is an art form in its own regard. Some frames are more valuable than the art they contain. Picture frames add to the aesthetic appeal of a work of art. Some are delicate and fragile while others are built to last. Picture frames have another function not involving aesthetics: frames protect the art that is contained within them. Does this Spark an idea?

How to Design a Picture Frame
-
1
Make thumbnail sketches. Thumbnail sketches are small drawings of potential design ideas. Take a piece of paper and draw two-inch squares all over the paper using a ruler. Brainstorm first. Use the idea that you may be considering. Draw variations of that design. During the process of drawing those, you might get another design idea. The trick is to keep your pen or pencil drawing. Try not to think too much and just let it flow. Think of shapes and materials that could be implemented in your design. Make notes to the side. Do 50 thumbnails and then choose the best 10.

2
Design the details for the frame. Design a set of details for each of the 10 thumbnails. Mix and match details from several of the 10 thumbnails. Think about the colors and the materials of the frame. If the frame is to be carved, look at some examples of high-quality craftsmanship picture frames.

Consider the structural component of the design. How will the frame go together? Does the frame need tracks for glass? How will the picture be inserted into the frame? Keep your design ideas simple and effective. The back of the frame serves a function, but it is not going to be seen. Do not put too much consideration to the back of the frame unless, of course, the frame is reversible.

4
Draw three versions of the desired frame out of the 10 design alternatives. Once you have drawn them, take a step back---a new understanding of the design might become apparent. Sleep on it. After returning to the design, a realization may occur. Then you will figure out the best solution to the problem. Keep it simple.

5
Make a study model of the one selected frame. Building a small model of the design helps the designer visualize the finished product. See how well the solution holds up to your ideal frame. The design might need slight adjustments to be more effective or to increase its aesthetic appeal. Minor adjustments should be few; they should not detract from or alter the final design so much that it loses its appeal.

Tips & Warnings
Keep the overall design simple, but complexity is fine for the face of the frame. Don't make it gaudy or tacky. Use good craftsmanship.
Be careful with the glass.
