Gas grills are great because they do not have the clean up that is involved with a charcoal grill. They also allow better control of the cooking temperatures according to Healthy U published by Northwestern University. The drawback is that they do not impart the same smoky taste as a charcoal grill. There is a way around this. It is easy to make a gas grill smoke. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Bowl
  • Water
  • Wood chips such as mesquite or hickory
  • Heavy duty aluminum foil

Instructions

  1. Process

    • 1

      Fill the bowl with water and add the wood chips to soak. Let them soak for 30 minutes. The amount of wood chips depends on how long the food will cook. Add 1 handful for something quick like hamburgers or steaks.

      Tear off a piece of aluminum foil approximately 12 inches long.

      Place the soaked wood chips in the middle of the aluminum foil.

      Fold the aluminum foil up around the chips from opposite ends and double fold a seam down the middle. Double fold the remaining open ends to seal the packet.

      Slice some holes in the top of the packet.

      Place the packet underneath the grate of the gas grill directly on the burner and replace the grate.

      Light the grill and preheat for 10 to 15 minutes. By the end of this time the gas grill smoke should be rising and the grill ready to cook with.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you will be cooking for a long period of time, make several packets and replace them as needed.
