Check out books from the public library. There are many books available on the history, art and practice of astrology, and you'll be able to find several treatments of the subject at almost any library. While you may not be ready yet to choose among the many schools of interpretation, you will be able to gather the basics, such as the twelve astrological signs and houses, through these resources. Detailed treatises, as for instance on medical astrology, if not on the shelves, should be available through interlibrary loan; some libraries charge a fee for the use of interlibrary loan, but some do not, so inquire.

Read astrological forecasts in newspapers. Most cities have free weekly newspapers, and many have a section, if small, devoted to astrology. If not, you can always go back to the library and read newspapers there for free. You may not be able to learn how to cast horoscopes in this way, but over time you can learn some of the more common traits of the various astrological signs. You may not think you have a skill or craft that you can exchange, but you may be surprised. Someone may need help with transportation, an upcoming move or caring for a pet while on vacation. People who study and practice astrology are already part of a counterculture so they may be more open to an alternative payment system. If you're not sure if someone even does astrology in your area, take a look at alternative medicine clinics, acupuncture centers or health food stores for people advertising these services.

Find an online course that teaches astrology for free. As with anything online, always be careful about entering sites you are unsure about, make sure you read the fine print and if it says it's free, they shouldn't be asking you for your credit card information.
