How to Clean Real Fur

A fur coat, shawl or other fur garment is a large investment. Taking care of your real fur clothing item is key to keeping it looking fresh, new and luxurious. Cleaning a real fur, however, is no easy task. Thorough cleaning of a real fur should be left to professionals, but you might be able to spot-clean your fir between professional cleaning..

Things You'll Need

• Cornmeal or sawdust
• Dry cleaning solvent
• Vacuum
• Clean cloth
• Large bowl or drum

Instructions

1. Place 1 cup of cornmeal or sawdust in a large bowl or drum. Add 1-2 tablespoons of dry cleaning solvent. Mix together so that the cornmeal or sawdust is moistened, but not wet.

2. Work in the solvent mixture to the spot on the real fur you want to clean. Only work the mixture in as far as the fur, do not get any on the pelt. Begin with a small, less noticeable, spot in the event the mixture dulls the fur.

3. Let mixture set on the spot for 2 to 4 minutes.

4. Vacuum out the solvent mixture on a low suction setting.

5. Comb fingers through fur to remove any remaining solvent mixture.

6. If satisfied with the result, go on to cleaning other parts of the real fur garment.
