4
Send out additional units from your city to build roads, irrigate land and explore the world around you. Build defense units to protect your city from other civilizations that may attempt to attack.
-
5
Start researching new technologies. Any advancements to your civilization will come from research. Balance them between offensive military research and scientific research, such as writing and mathematics.
-
6
Improve your capital city by constructing additional buildings such as the granary and barracks for your units. Also keep the city protected with walls.
-

Use one of your settler units to build a second city. This will begin the expansion of your civilization. Once the city has been built, repeat this process with additional cities, spreading your resources between building units to explore the world. Push to meet other cultures and resources that expand and fortify your own.
-
8
Meet other cultures. Additional civilizations will make contact with you and you can choose whether to negotiate trades, bow to their demands or declare war. Make note of your offensive units before declaring war, as entering battles unprepared can leave your civilization at a distinct short- and long-term disadvantage.
